Filling a Long-Term Knowledge Gap
In collaboration with the Maritime Administration, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) launched the SafeMTS program, an initiative designed to improve safety within the U.S. Maritime Transportation System (MTS) by encouraging confidential reporting of near-miss safety events. A central challenge for this program was creating a system that would inspire trust and participation within the maritime industry, supporting a secure, nonpunitive way to share sensitive and proprietary data. The program required not only robust data collection and analysis but also strategic communication and user-friendly tools to ensure its success.
Melding Data and Technology Expertise With Strategic Communications
BTS engaged MacroSys to provide comprehensive support for the SafeMTS program, ensuring its success from the pilot phase onward. Our approach centers on simplifying complex safety data reporting into user-friendly submission processes and secure data management. We have leveraged our deep industry knowledge to provide tailored communications, outreach, and engagement strategies specifically for the maritime transportation sector, which has helped build trust and encourage voluntary reporting.
We also provide expert support in data administration, helping to collect, compile, and analyze sensitive near-miss data while ensuring its security. Our team, trained in applicable data confidentiality regulations and requirements (including the Confidential Information Protection and Statistical Efficiency Act), meticulously manages the data, transforming it into actionable insights. We also support the program’s governance by assisting with data review and providing essential program and financial reporting to ensure the project stays on track and meets key milestones.
A Proven Concept Now Ready for Launch
With support from MacroSys, SafeMTS successfully collected valuable near-miss data as part of a pilot program that proved the feasibility and importance of a confidential reporting program for the maritime industry. Our user-friendly design of participant materials and clear communications strategy have been instrumental in streamlining the data collection process, safeguarding sensitive information, and further supporting a culture of safety. MacroSys’s support was crucial to demonstrating the program’s effectiveness, showcasing our ability to manage complex, mission-critical initiatives and deliver exceptional results.
