Ensuring Data Accuracy in a Complex Transit Landscape

Public transportation in the United States depends on reliable and up-to-date transit data. With thousands of agencies, countless service types, and billions of annual passenger trips, the system is complex and constantly evolving. The National Transit Database (NTD) stands at the center of this effort, serving as the primary source for comprehensive transit data nationwide.

Ensuring these data remain current and accurate requires ongoing collaboration and a commitment to quality at every step. Policymakers at all levels—local, regional, state, and federal—depend on this information to guide planning, set policies, make investments, and allocate funding for transportation projects. Whether it’s a major city system with thousands of daily riders or a rural service helping seniors and people with disabilities, the transit industry relies on consistent data to operate efficiently and meet the needs of communities across the country.

Driving Innovation and Accuracy in Transit Data

MacroSys partners with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to help more than 3,000 public transportation agencies nationwide produce and report reliable transit data. Behind every published data product is a steady rhythm of communication, coordination, and problem solving. By combining a dedicated team with effective tools and resources, we ensure that even within this complex data program, the public consistently receives timely and trustworthy information.

Each analyst carefully reviews hundreds of report submissions each year, working directly with their assigned agencies to resolve issues, stay aligned, and keep the entire team informed through consistent communication. With regular outreach, we make it easy for agencies to stay connected and understand what’s needed while giving them access to in-depth training and a wide range of helpful resources. By providing clear, standardized guidance through annually updated NTD policy manuals, the NTD Uniform System of Accounts, and step-by-step instructions for navigating Appian, we help agencies confidently complete monthly and annual reports. Depending on the size of the agency, these reports can include anywhere from fewer than 10 forms to more than 100. After multiple rounds of collaboration and quality assurance, the final data are published, ensuring decision-makers have accurate, high-quality information each year.

Throughout the year-long journey from data collection to final publication, MacroSys focuses on making every step more efficient. We streamline workflows, simplify operations, and strengthen team productivity with the goal of driving contract growth. An analyst’s success in managing their caseload really comes down to the strength of the team behind them. Our internal tools and reference materials—built with SQL, Power BI, and Microsoft 365, and maintained and organized through SharePoint—play a major role in supporting rigorous validation across hundreds of data points. Real-time collaboration keeps everyone aligned through task tracking in JIRA and a detailed, always-current caseload sheet, that keeps the validation process progressing seamlessly. Structured annual training, regular check-ins and meetings, and the support of the NTD Help Desk ensure continuous learning, open communication, and a more connected team.

Plotting Point A to Point B—and Beyond

As a team effort between the FTA and MacroSys, the NTD collects monthly and annual data to produce thousands of unique data products. Each year, the NTD releases 41 annual database files, 6 time series data tables, 2 specialized reports on Reduced Reporter Safety Information and Transit Agency Security Personnel, plus an individual Transit Agency Profile for every reporting agency. An estimated 3,208 profiles were released in 2024 alone. On top of that, 8 files featuring the country’s largest transit agencies are released monthly, which adds up to 24 Monthly Ridership files and 72 monthly Safety and Security files over the course of the year.

And it doesn’t stop there—every year brings a new edition of the National Transit Summaries and Trends (NTST), which transforms the annual data collected into powerful visuals that make patterns and industry trends easy to understand. All told, these products build a comprehensive and long-running survey of the public transit landscape, while preserving vital historical data that paints a picture of where the industry is heading.

The result? Better decisions, smarter investments, and innovations that keep the public transit industry moving forward. And a more modern path that is supported by the speed and automation that artificial intelligence offers.
