Ensuring Digital Accessibility Across the Department
The U.S. Department of Education (ED) needed to make all digital content accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. However, inconsistent processes, limited staff training, and a lack of centralized support left many documents non-compliant with Section 508 and WCAG standards. These issues created barriers for users with disabilities and increased the risk of legal and reputational issues. The core challenge was building a sustainable, department-wide approach to digital accessibility.
Enterprise Remediation and Responsive Help Desk
MacroSys partnered with ED’s Information Technology Accessibility Program (ITAP) to launch a comprehensive accessibility support program. We implemented robust tracking systems, standardized workflows, and a SharePoint-based case management system. Our team provided document remediation, validation, and actionable feedback, while also managing a responsive help desk. We developed and led targeted trainings, created branded resources, and offered ongoing outreach to build accessibility knowledge across the department.
Efficient Accessibility, Empowered Staff
The result is a modern, enterprise-wide accessibility program that has empowered over 4,000 ED staff. MacroSys’s efforts led to a 35% reduction in major accessibility violations, nearly 600 staff trained, and a rebranded, user-friendly accessibility website. Our management approach ensures continuous improvement, data-driven decision-making, and a culture of accessibility, enabling ED to deliver inclusive digital content and meet all federal compliance requirements.
